Fenrir didn’t come to bed that night, but when I awoke the next morning, the other side was warm and unmade. Sunlight streamed in through the window, warming the side of my face. I glowered at the dented pillow and muttered under my breath.

Was this progress? I wasn’t sure. He had seemed happy enough during the spanking and then the blowjob, but he’d acted like I’d been manipulative.

My wolf, who lay on her belly with her head rested on her front paws, cracked open an eye and yawned. At least her relationship with Fenrir was uncomplicated… unlike mine.

A soft knock on the door broke me out of my thoughts. “Who’s there?”

“Only me.” Mum poked her head through the door, her brows raised, her lips curved in a hopeful smile.

“Come in.” I sat up and arranged the covers around my chest.

She padded across the room and lowered herself onto the edge of the bed. “How are things with you and Fenrir?”

“Better, I think?” I said with a frown.

“But your face says you’re not sure.” Mum mirrored my expression and smoothed her hands down a pair of slim-fitting pants she wore with a linen tunic.

Heat rose to my cheeks, and I turned my gaze away, trying not to squirm. “Were you listening at the door?”

“This is a very serious matter, Lydia.” She gave me a firm pat on the knee. “Fenrir isn’t just any old wolf, and he isn’t just an alpha.”

“Right,” I muttered. “He’s the alpha of alphas, a god among wolves.”

“Which you seem to forget,” Mum said, her tone disapproving. “Back in my day, I was constantly fighting bitches to protect what was mine. As soon as they find a way around Fenrir’s prickly personality, it will be open season on your mate.”

My entire body sagged into the pillow. “I’m trying to connect with him, but it looks like he wants me to grovel for not volunteering to stay with him in that cave.”

“Then grovel.”

I folded my arms across my chest. “And what if he asks if I’m willing to stay there with him for the rest of eternity?”

Mum’s jaw clicked shut. “Bloody hell.”

“See what I mean?”

She rubbed her hands together and frowned. “If seduction is moving too slowly, then we’ll move on to plan B.”

“No,” I growled.

She hopped off the bed. “This one’s guaranteed to work. I’ve even created the potion.”

“No love potions.”

Mum shook her head and backed toward the door with a smile. “I wouldn’t dream of interfering with Fenrir’s free will.”

My eyes bulged. “But you’d meddle with mine?”

“It’s a little something to stimulate a heat. One pill is all it takes, and he’ll be all over you. Best of all, it will make you pregnant, secure your mating bond, as well as Fenrir’s forgiveness.”

I shot out of bed, my heart leaping through a ring of panic. “Don’t you dare—”

A shadow fell across the window, blocking out the light. I turned to find the sky darkening until everything went black.

My throat spasmed. This was no eclipse of the sun.
